Seeruppu Podi #Cheatrecipe 1

Headsup: The original recipe was first published on Deccan Chronicle by Bindu Gopal Rao and Recipe by Jyothi Sri Pappu

For most South Indians, the day starts with atleast one kind of “Podi.” It could be Kandi Podi or Mulagai Podi.

Kiddos are not the only ones who enjoy them; the whole family joins in to relish this ancient traditional recipe with just a dash of hot ghee or sesame oil. Our twist: adding sunflower and pumpkin seeds to the traditional Senaga Podi.

Seeruppu Podi, in all sense, is “Seed + Paruppu= Seeruppu Podi.” We aren’t sure how many times you'll ask for Idly, dosa, or rice to have this Podi.

Ingredients:

1. Sunflower Seeds- 1 cup

2. Pumpkin Seeds- 1 cup

3. Fried Gram- 1/2 cup

4. Dry coconut powder - 1/2 cup

5. Salt as required

6. Red chilli powder - 1/2 cup

7. Garlic cloves- 5-8

8. Jeera- 1 tsp

9. Sesame oil - 1 tsp

Directions:

1. In a clay pot, heat sesame oil. Add sunflower & pumpkin seeds and slow roast. Slow roasting in a clay pot adds extra flavor to the Podi, making it more enjoyable.

2. In a mixer grinder, add all other ingredients and the slow-roasted seeds.

3. Grind the whole ingredients into a semi-coarse powder.

4. Store in an airtight container.

Tastes best with:

Seeruppu Podi

Rice, Idly, Dosa, and you can also add this Podi while making curries like Baingan Masala. Add hot ghee or sesame oil for the best taste.

Description:

Seeruppu Podi can be categorized as a Cheat Recipe (a term first coined by Jyothi Sri Pappu)  where you can mask the taste and texture of sunflower and pumpkin seeds with fried gram, coconut powder, and garlic. Recently, we found that many people are suffering from Vit-D deficiency, and this recipe can be one of the best options to meet your Vit-D levels, especially for kids.
